Application of Learning Theories in Virtual Environments to Improve Academic Performance in Basic Education Students

Abstract

The incorporation of virtual environments into basic education has increased considerably; however, their availability alone does not guarantee improvements in academic performance. This article aimed to analyze how behaviorist, cognitive, constructivist, sociocultural, connectivist, self-regulated learning, and multimedia learning theories support the design of virtual environments intended to improve the academic outcomes of basic education students. An integrative literature review was conducted using academic studies and reviews published between January 2021 and May 2026. The findings indicate that the most effective interventions are not characterized merely by the use of technology but by the alignment of curricular objectives, authentic activities, progressive scaffolding, social interaction, formative feedback, coherent multimedia resources, and opportunities for self-regulation. Evidence also shows that socioeconomic status, digital competence, family support, teaching presence, and connectivity quality moderate the effects of virtual education. The main research gap is the limited integration of learning theories into multidimensional explanatory models specifically designed for basic education. As a contribution, the Integrative Model of Virtual Theoretical-Pedagogical Mediation is proposed, in which technology influences academic performance through five mechanisms: motivational activation, cognitive processing, social construction, self-regulation, and contextual transfer.
