Empiricism as a Foundation for Meaningful Learning in Early Childhood Students through Guided Practical Experiences

Experience is a persistent intuition in early childhood education; however, touching materials, playing, or completing a task does not by itself ensure meaningful learning. This integrative literature review examines how contemporary pedagogical empiricism can ground guided practical experiences that connect perception, action, language, prior knowledge, and transfer in young children. Academic publications and institutional documents issued between January 2021 and May 2026 were examined through structured searches of scholarly databases and portals, guided by PRISMA 2020 reporting principles. Following identification, deduplication, and relevance appraisal, a corpus of 25 sources was synthesized using a matrix covering type of experience, child agency, adult mediation, meaning-making mechanism, outcomes, conditions, and risks. Recent evidence particularly supports guided play, scientific inquiry, purposeful manipulation, and prediction-action-explanation cycles. Their benefits depend on clear goals, bounded child choice, open questions, contingent feedback, inferential talk, documentation, and gradual withdrawal of support. The advantage is not uniform: guided play more consistently outperforms free play for some mathematics and spatial outcomes, whereas differences from direct instruction are small or heterogeneous. The Guided Experience for Meaning-Making Model (GEMM) is proposed through five moments: connect, anticipate, explore, represent, and transfer. The model addresses a gap between philosophical advocacy of empiricism and didactic prescription by providing observable criteria to distinguish manual activity, educational experience, and meaningful learning. Empiricism is pedagogically fruitful when experience is interpreted, socially mediated, and revisable, rather than reduced to sensory exposure or reflection-free activity.
